PREVALENCE

ED is the most frequent sexual problem that men report to their medical providers. ED affects as many as 30 million men in the United States, and the condition gets more common as men age.

SYMPTOMS

  • Difficulty achieving an erection
  • Difficulty maintaining an erection
  • Reduced libido or sexual desire

DIAGNOSING

The goal of proper diagnosis and consultation is for the healthcare provider to find what’s causing the problem so they can prescribe an appropriate erectile dysfunction treatment in Canada. ED is diagnosed through medical history, physical examination, and various tests.

If you opt for an online consultation, the medical provider will ask you to complete a medical questionnaire or review your medical history. They will also ask what medications or supplements you are taking since some drugs can also cause some form of ED.

It is crucial to be honest with your doctor during the consultation, even if it can sometimes be embarrassing. Trust your healthcare provider, and it is best to ask them about your condition rather than rely on the Internet.

CAUSES

ED can result from lifestyle, physical, and psychological factors. Here’s a closer look:

LIFESTYLE FACTORS

  • Lack of quality sleep
  • Poor diet
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Substance abuse

PHYSICAL FACTORS

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Certain medications (antidepressants, antihistamines, and drugs for high blood pressure)
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Neurological disorders
  • Obesity
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Peyronie’s disease

PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Performance anxiety
  • Relationship problems
  • Stress

What are the Common Treatment Methods for ED?

Proper evaluation is essential since erectile dysfunction treatment in Canada should depend on the cause of the condition. Common treatments include:

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

  1. Diet and exercise: Your doctor will advise you to change your diet and eat more fruits, grains, lean meat, and vegetables. It is also best to increase your physical activity by moving more, which can help lessen the risk factors for ED, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.
  2. Improving sleep: Get adequate sleep and see a doctor if you have any sleeping problems. Quality sleep can help reduce ED symptoms and also improve your overall health.
  3. Limit alcohol intake: Excessive alcohol consumption can cause a lot of problems, including the ability to achieve an erection. Do not drink too much alcohol, especially if you are advised to take ED medications since it may delay the absorption of the pill.
  4. Reduce stress: Take part in activities that can help manage stress, such as meditation or yoga. Stress can contribute to ED and lead to other health issues. Please speak with your doctor and have them recommend a good program to help lessen anxiety.
  5. Quit smoking: Smoking kills, and it’s not cool! It can damage your blood vessels and repress blood flow to the penis. Try a nicotine patch or get help from an expert so you can successfully kick the habit.

MEDICAL DEVICES

  1. Penile implants
  2. VEDs or Vacuum Erection Devices

ORAL MEDICATIONS

Pde-5 inhibitors are usually prescribed as the first line of treatment for ED. Popular ED medications include:

PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING

Your doctor can recommend couples or individual therapy, depending on your situation. If psychological factors cause ED, then counseling can be beneficial. Couples counseling can also be recommended if ED is already causing relationship problems.

SUPPOSITORIES and INJECTABLE MEDICATIONS

  1. Alprostadil
  2. Combination Medications

SURGERY

  • Vascular surgery is usually recommended if blood flow problems cause ED.

TRT

  • Testosterone Replacement Therapy is an effective treatment if low testosterone levels cause ED.

ED and Testosterone Therapy

Testosterone plays a huge role in male sexual function since it is the primary male sex hormone. Testosterone is crucial for many bodily functions, such as the following:

  • Bone density
  • Development and sustaining of male sexual characteristics
  • Muscle mass and strength
  • Regulation of sex drive or libido
  • Sperm production

Hypogonadism or low testosterone levels can lead to issues like decreased muscle mass, ED, fatigue, and reduced libido. So, if your ED is caused by having low testosterone levels, your doctor will recommend the proper ED medication Canada to ensure that the problem will be addressed.

The goal of testosterone therapy is to bring back normal testosterone levels and also relieve the symptoms caused by having low testosterone, such as ED. Standard methods of testosterone therapy include:

  • Injections
  • Oral pills
  • Patches
  • Pellets
  • Topical creams and gels

Testosterone therapy may cause various risks, such as:

  • Acne
  • Blood clots
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Enlarged breasts
  • Limited sperm production
  • Prostate health
  • Sleep apnea

The right testosterone therapy can do wonders in terms of improving your libido and managing ED. However, it is essential to note that testosterone therapy is not recommended for men who have ED caused by other factors. Don’t worry, though; your healthcare provider will determine the proper ED treatment in Canada, depending on the root cause of your ED.

Testosterone therapy can still be recommended as part of a combination treatment with any of the following:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Oral medications (PDE-5 inhibitors)
  • Psychotherapy

Key Takeaways

Erectile dysfunction can be a challenging condition, especially when you do not seek professional help. ED can be caused by various factors, including having low testosterone levels. The treatment for ED would largely depend on what’s causing the erection issues, which is why it is essential to consult a medical professional as soon as you experience the symptoms. If low testosterone levels cause ED, then your medical provider may recommend testosterone therapy as the primary erectile dysfunction treatment in Canada. Your doctor may also prescribe other forms of treatment to ensure the proper management of your condition. Additionally, do not forget your regular follow-up appointments so your doctor can monitor your ED and overall condition. Trust your doctor and improve your lifestyle, and you will be well on your way to a better and more fulfilling sex life.

The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire below will provide you with a quick result in the form of a score from 5 to 25.

Men with concerns about their erectile function can take this quick test and get some information on whether it might be good to seek help for ED.

What Qualifies as an Erectile Dysfunction Problem?

Most men have experienced some difficulty in getting or keeping an erection. Having trouble when you’re nervous or have had too much to drink may not be something to be concerned about.

It isn’t erectile dysfunction unless you are experiencing ongoing difficulty.

The Canadian Study of Erectile Dysfunction identified 49.4% of men over 40 with ED (Canadian Urological Association erectile dysfunction guideline 2015). Though all men may experience an occasional lapse of sexual function, ED is the persistent inability to achieve an erection, despite being sexually aroused.

IIEF-5 Erectile Dysfunction Questionnaire Scoring

Each of the questions has five possible responses, with score values from one to five.

Your total score is simply the sum of the values of all five answers to the ED test questions.

Possible ED Test Score Ranges

22-25: No erectile dysfunction
17-21: Mild erectile dysfunction
12-16: Mild to moderate erectile dysfunction
8-11: Moderate erectile dysfunction
5-7: Severe erectile dysfunction

The results of this brief self-evaluation should be used as a guide for whether you might want to consult with a doctor, and not as a replacement for a medical consultation.

Take the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) Questionnaire

Answer the five questions and the results will be automatically emailed to you in minutes.

The information you choose to share will be treated as confidential and will not be disclosed to any third parties.

2.When you had erections with sexual stimulation, how often were your erections hard enough for penetration?*
3. During sexual intercourse, how often were you able to maintain your erection after you had penetrated (entered) your partner?*
4. During sexual intercourse, how difficult was it to maintain your erection to completion of intercourse?*
5. When you attempted sexual intercourse, how often was it satisfactory for you?*
