What is Imitrex
Imitrex (Sumatriptan) is a medicine made for symptoms of migraines and cluster headaches in adults.
It shrinks blood vessels around the brain and decreases substances in the body that may initiate symptoms such as headache pain, sensitivity to sound and light, and any other migraine symptoms. It is not made to prevent or minimize the number of attacks.
Dosage
Imitrex can be prescribed in 5mg, 10mg or 20mg strengths. The recommended dose is one spray administered into one nostril once daily and can be repeated once after 2 hours. The maximum dose is 40mg per day; unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.
Imitrex is not recommended for children under 18 years of age
Storage
Imitrex should be kept away from heat and light. Imitrex must always be stored between 2°C and 30°C in the carton provided.
Side Effects
The most common side effects include the following:
- • dizziness
- • spinning sensation
- • pressure of heavy feeling in the body
- • nausea
- • vomiting
- • increased body temperature
- • getting chills
- • mild headache (no migraine)
- • irritation/numbness/pain/burning in the nose or throat
- • warmth, redness, or mild tingling under the skin
Serious side effects may include Hypertension including Hypertensive crisis in patients with or without a history of hypertension.
Immediately contact the doctor if you experience the following: mental/mood changes, cold hands or feet, hearing changes, or blue fingers, toes, or nails.
